During the pilgrimage, male pilgrims are required to wear an Ihram, (a garment of 2 pieces, one made of a white cloth that is hemmed from the waist down, the other covering the torso), and to wear a pair of flip-flops or sandals. The Ihram puts all men on the same footing before God because there is no difference between a rich man and a poor man except by the piety of the hearts. Children are also required to wear it.
